A table of images of all sorts.

Here's a table of images from the gallery with some background notes. These will range from my drawings and paintings to screen prints of favourite spreadsheets to photographs to digital edits of found images used for cd covers to tracklists for music compilations and radio show edits.

Still to come will be scans of images that have been around me at times of my life and things of interest to me personally or have just caught my fancy and that I'd like to share with the world.

My artwork is in the gallery without notes, and there's a lot of interesting material in the audio archives too!

Sazzle-Dazzle I created this one especially and uniquely for Valentine's Day for Dear Sarah March, an old and new love most dear to my heart. I drew it inside the card itself (and plan to add more pink!) The dominant theme is one of a butterfly, The Butterfly Of Love, within which are various symbols that represent aspects of our relationship over the years. Hell Parrot One of far fewer sketches done at the new meeting table with the Vancouver Coastal Health Clinical Housing Team. Developed to feature the purple ball point pen that became a feature for me in the latter part of the year, and to be the 1st part of a series of 4 more yellow pieces. Mauve Melvin This was the most primitive sketch of a monsters face from many years ago and as part of a theme of trying to finish off at least some of my primitive unfinished and often ancient work, I decided to honour my faviourite band, The Melvns, and although its not clear, the word Melvin does appear underneath the face. It's not meant to be sophisticated. Not much of this year's work is, as the other theme Ive kept afloat is of trying to produce more work and with more abandon in the process. Haggatha, Doggatha, Deer (unfinished) This one was inpired by meeting Phil, the plays bass and yells in Vancouver-based band Haggatha. They use superior vinyl technology and Phil gave me their first three records, which are all great. I was inspired to see whether I could conjure up a Haggatha of my own and this is the result - a few months later, and probably not complete, though I imagine it'll do. The officia completion date of this version is Christmas Day, and my greeting this year to friends and colleagues and aquaintances alike, is Haggatha Christmas every one! With love, of course. Egg Red Leg (ACT #23) The middle one of the first three of the nonet (5 of which are done and 4 still in progress as I write, 2012-01-04) of "finished" doodles from the ACT table. These first three were intended to be quickly drawn as part of a campaign to promote speed and hope and unfettered thought and action in my drawing, which I thought might be more productive than labouring over three works per year (such as Rock-Face, Toe-Nose and Octo-Fish.) Large Squares of Grey I'm not quite sure what I was thinking about here as I write (2011-07-24) but I want to make an effort to complete some explanatory notes here. So, I can tell you that in the midst of assembling the website I felt the need for some new material - I hadn't produced any art for a while because I'd been working on learning how to use HTML and CSS to develp the site here (and I'm only a hokey amateur anyway) - and so I photoshopped something, and that something is this. Going Through The Motions x 3 This image was found somewhere and represents the uniform at my junior and high school in England, King's School, Rochester. I put together a series of trios lke this whilst putting together the website, which at times seemed easier than creating three seperate entries for related items and a better presentation of the whole set at once. In this case, I liked qualities of both the screen print of the original digital image as well as a scan of the printed single image as a cover for a CD edit of an original radio show, Going Through The Motions, which is drawn from archives of taped music from some of my youth spent listening the the John Peel Show. Opening Ceremony (unfinished) A drawing in ball-point pen on scratch-pad paper. This one is scanned underway in January 2010 (postponed significantly in lieu of developing this website) and far further along than the version shown here. But as I write, kirpalani-griffin.org still calls, as it may do for a while... The original notes were from an inspirational opening ceremony of the IUHPE conference in Vancouver in 2007 and I trust worth noting. Botty A drawing in ballpoint pen and scratch pad. I've never entirely liked this one, although I do like it, and technically I think it's not yet finished. Developed gradually over a couple of years, it stands as the 2nd in a coherent trio of drawings (alongside Ducky, above, and Eggy, below) completed in 2009 to represent my traditional Christmas gift to my friends everywhere. It's also the centre-piece of 9 drawings (6 of which are here as I write on 2011-01-01) and I imagine I'll work on the overall tone and depth in due course as the final 3 pieces are completed. Resilient Balloons A drawing in ball-point pen and scratch pad that was relatively quickly completed vs. similar ones and is a little rough around the edges. There's a skull present and a ballon. much of this was laid out at a day conference about the value of community support for social service and health care clients during my time at MPA. Beast Of Wildeor This is a special drawing because I feel that it features my father (as a gorilla-like face on the left.) It was all completed during a week of my father's stay with me in Vancouver in July 2009, often during evenings when Dad was sitting off the my left. I didn't was him, though, until I recognized te eyebrows. The incentive for this drawing was unique so far in that after connecting with an old colleague from my high school and learning that he was writing a series of novels and being asked if i'd produce and example of my work as a potential illustrator, I produced this. Justice 18th in a series of digital image manipulations that were part of a multi-media creative project created by my cousin, Troy. The theme was that 25 words had been chosen by a group and would be selected in a random sequence every two days. Anxiety Disorders This one began during my classwoom time at Douglas College and sat unfinished for a long while until I mnaged to get the ocean scene in place and upgrate the level of detail generally and leave it at this. In a panel in the box in the water is an ocean scene where my friend Ian is represented by a dog representing Dante, the lovely beast that he and his wife keep. Herpes Presentation A very rough and ready drawing, probably not finished, with an interesting number of faces and creatures, as is already a theme in my drawings. As is often the case the title relates to the origin of the notes under the doodle, which in this case were for a presentation about Herpes to the class at Douglas College. An Errand Of Mercy DVD Cover I was lacking some enthusiasm for an idea this Christmas, until I decided to somehow tie together all of my early creative Christmas gifts from the "analog" era, which were music compilation tapes and simple drawings photocopied on paper folded into Christmas card (and sometimes hand-coloured.) So this became a collection of 1/2 dozen tapes and about 50 images on one DVD and accompanied by a collection of audio files that divide most of the soundtrack for the original Star Trek episode, An Errand Of Mercy. An Errand Of Mercy CD Tracklist Screen Print A screen print of the CD track titles of the Star Trek soundtrack element to this year's DVD gift. The Errand Of Mercy episode has always been a favourite of mine due to some exceptionally rich voices and works for me as audio alone. As usual, I spent a lot of attention to detail and each track on the disc is carefully organized by themes and events and is coherent enough in itself that they work well as random appearances between the chunks of music if all the audio is played in random mode. What can't I say?y The Spreadsheet For The Meaning Of Life is my graphic representation of my reasonale idea of whatever meaning there is or might be in life. It promotes love, initiative and creativity, personal responsibility other good things whilst considering some of the limitations that human kind faces, depending upon their circumstances. I think this is actually pretty comprehensive, but there are many nuances here. In the longer-term, I've imagined that I could perhaps turn this into a game of sort with varying themes geared to teach people life skills in varying scenarios, or just for fun. Building Policy (unfinished) This is unfinished although I believe I know what else I'd like to do with it. It's one of a series of 7 dreams that I had during this year from which I committed something related to the now burgeoning doodle format. This is 2nd in a series of 5 of those drawings intended to be presented as a coherent row (when I finish them all, that is.) This one features representation from left to right of a futuristic and disquiet London, a memory of a church on a road in in Provence (left side in the right arch) and the Walderslade Road toward the Poacher's Pocket (right side in the right arch.) In for forefront, unfortunately, are my friends Brian and Gill, who for reasons that were never clear in my dream or out, were suspended and cocooned when I came back from running for help after the group of us who had holidayed together in Provence (2006) came under attack by air pistol fire from what would have been the Walderslade putting course. This one represents a scenario where on the walk home from an evening out I was cornered by a thug and his henchment who would mug me. The fear in the need for fight or flight woke me before I coudl be beaten to a pulp, at least. Phew! The memory still disturbe me a little though. Reasons For Homelessness At Intake Statisics Calculator Spreadsheet This is one of a suite of spreadsheets I introduced during my time at Lookout geared to export data from their HIFIS database to summarize the data regarding reasons for homelessness. Without a reporting function that could include many of the custom data fields in use at Lookout, manual methods of printing lengthy lists and marking everything our by hand were extremely time consuming and not very reliable, less so because few of the staff were given consistent guidelines for how and when to populate these fields and there were literally 100's of them. I believe my estimate at the time was that this suite of spreadsheets reduced the reporting process by 10 days or so per site and was significantly more reliable. Diesel And Steam Locomotives Tracklist Scan This one is a tracklist for a collection of train sounds that I put together for my boss at Lookout, Al Mitchell. I find it amazing that sound of all sorts can have a powerful emotional affect on the listener and with repeated listens the nuances of almost any sound can become musical. Train sounds are a great example of this. the former part is an LP of sounds I bought for Al's entertaintment, since he's a true trainspotter. I enjoyed it so much and I always hated to use a CD and not fill it up as much as possible, so the latter part of this was a collection of CD's carefully balanced to be as interresting and enchanting as possible. Determinants Of Health This is the 3rd in a series of 5 of 7 dreams of the summer of 2007. Is that clear? This one features the front desk area of Lookout's Alexander St. homeless shelter in Vancouver. The view through the door is into my manager, Al Mitchell's office and features a pile of paper symbolising a perpetual mess. Mostly, he did know his way around, and it certainly is difficult to concentrate on anything much working at a homeless shelter. The dream featured me shouting at Al after turning up at work one day and dinding my LP storage shelves were there but no LPs. In the dream, Al reassured me that he'd sort it out by the end of that day and I waited. Finally, though, he had to admit that he didn't know what had happened and had just been hoping to come up with something. No luck. I felt so badly about shouting at him I apologized in person the next day, even though it had only been a dream. The face is mine and my tear fills a glass to drink for the homeless, besides which is a sandwhich. The empty shelves are there and Al is represented as a Peace Symbol (and a chair.). Off Yer Backside (unfinished) This is one of a series of 7 drawings initiated in 2007 reflecting something of memorable dreams. It's further from finished than most of the series, but it;s an important one because it features the first appearance of the Kirpalani-Griffin concept. At this time I was involved with a research group at UBC (PCHR) and felt highly stimulated intellectually. I was so productive for a while I felt almost manic - I note that the results have some worth, I believe, so it was work worth doing. In this one my mother was nagging me to get off my backside and I seemed to have sores from sitting still. I understood it to mean that I needed to really fully embrace this creative urge of mine and start making something of my efforts. Decoding Methodologies This is a rough and ready entry in the doodle series, but I found it fascnating as the faces of various creatures seemed to pop in and out of view depending upon which part of the image I dwelled on. erhaps the same will happen to you? My friend Sean mentioned that the creatures also look as though they're tumbling down a roller-coaster toward the viewer. I've also been taken with the idea of a 3-pronged tongue ever since. Story Telling Conference This one took me by surprise. It all started listening to an academically focussed telephone conference during my time with UBC's PCHR research group. I had an odd but fairly bare outline at the end of the meeting, which I remember had interested me very much. At the end of the day, I was excited to have been inspired enough to suddenly produce something like this with a ball-point pen and scratch pad over the next evenings, and I was excited to get some very positive feedback. 101 English Greats Tracklist Screen Print The tracklist of a collection of 101 tracks that I collected as the soundtrack of a party I held at home. As usual, the songs are arranged to reflect one another as much as possible and offer mini cathartic episodes all along. I'm sorry, but I can't help it: Whatever I do, I like the result to have some sort of meaning. Just to torture myself, I also arranged the artists in alphabetical order. It was a good party. Four Beast Of The Earth I was quite stunned by this one! It was very quickly done vs. most of my projects and almost entirely different from what I'd first envisioned. The truth is that I like this so much it almost scares me. It was the 4th of 4 small, simple oil painting that I spontaneously produced with oil paints inherited by my then partner, Chantal, from her father. The 4 beasts are man, woman, animal and entity. The entity is the face on top of the headless woman. I had the idea that these were fundamental's of our human existence and the entity really represents whatever it is that motivates us. Zilly The 2nd of my short series of 4 oil paitings this year, featuring a punk-rock Godzilla named Zilly, with sad eyes and single-nostrilled, puppy-god nose. He also had big teeth and a 3 pronged tongue, athlugh the 3rd prong was an afterthought. As unfinished as it looks, I really don;t think it needs anything else. I love my Zilly. One Early Idea (unfinished) A photo of an early stage of my first oil paiting in my spontaneous series of 4 this year, and I think my first oil painting in adult life at least. Service And Event Log Form This is an outstanding piece of work, I believe, because it represents not only a great solution to a complex problem that is well designed aesthetically and practically but also in terms of intelligently summarizing the breath of services provided at Lookout's programs. This fundamental data could be used at all of Lookout;s programs, including shelters, mental health drop-ins and long-term residences, and simple adaptations to expand or eliminate certain elements would allow for use of the same template for tracking service interactions in almost any social service or health care program. I'm actually very proud of the work that went into this form and proud to have gone on to feed it into the SIS2 database concept that I developed at Lookout and will present here as part of a suite of services at The Angela Griffin Foundation. Jesus, It's The Melvins This is the plain digital image that was used as a CD cover for the original radio show, Jesus, It's The Melvins, broadcast on Christmas Day 2005 on CiTR 101.9fm. The show consises of 1 hour of samples from Christian radio and 1 hour of vaguely related music by the Melvins, my favourite band. subsequently, I divided the source material into 2 discs of an hour each and designed accompanying covers. The image is drawn from a scan of a classic painting of the mythical character and a distorted copy of an image of Jesus' face laid on top. The show was an inquiry into the good and bad of Christian radio and although it might sound radical I believe it was an intellectual and respectful perspective. John Peel's Last 3 Shows CD Cover Screen Print After great toil and saddened by the death of champion DJ John Peel in 2004, I managed to capture poor quality 56kbs .mp3s of his last 3 shows for BBC's World Service radio. With only 2 exceptions after months of searching and at great expense, I was able to source the original material and make superior recordings and splice them into the mp3's and then trim the whole lot just a little to fit onto a single CD. It was padded by the BBC's posthomous introductions as well, so I didn't lose any of John's original remarks. As always, it was great listening, and I was proud to learn that although not here, in his last week's shows he'd been playing the Melvins and Jello Biafra CD's, as had I on CiTR! I did all this because it's great listening and because I'm grateful that John Peel's exquisite taste and musical curiosity were one of the major influences in my life, and I'm grateful. World Heat Bloated - 7" Of The Melvins CD Cover Screen Print A simple image, obviouslt representing some excess, and the cover for a CD of the source material of an all Melvins radio show. This is all from 7" singles issued by the Melvins. At least one track plays at the wrong speed, I'm pretty sure it does anyway, but I like it like that. A Strange Place To Be CD Cover Screen Print This is the cover of a CD of source material for one of my radio shows on CiTR of the time. Take Me Back To Happy Valley This drawing was a real step forward for me, and somewhat to my annoyance, is actually still cited as a favourite drawing by others in spite of all the work I've done since. As you can see from earlier works, I took this doodling to a whole new level here, and i must admit that it took a fair bit of my spare time for a month or so during my time at Douglas College. The drawing began at one of the college days where we all sat in a circle and did some role-play activity where the instructor (the woman at top right) pretended to have various mental health conditions. Almost all day each of us was just watching the others. At some point, looking for a new shape to insire a few lines of a new doodle, I used my Melvins tea mug, which became the tower. It still amazes me that gven an opportunity to sit and listen to ideas, I find that doodling helps me concentrate and listening inspires my creativity. I often wish I could do it all day! Spaceship Passing This was simple and it annoys me that I screwed it up in one spot - I'll get back to fixing that perhaps - but it's one of those things to me that it seemed to show a spark of something. My friend Sean noticed the spaceship when it was upside down and now I can't see much there in the way I was originally drawing it. Funny that. Tomorrow's Folk Festival (Yesterday's News) Volumes 1-3 Front Covers Colour Screen Print This CD covers for an interesting 3 CD set of source material for a couple of my radio shows on CiTR. The theme was music from musicians about to appear at the Vancouver Folk Festival that year, and it's interspersed with pieces edit from news from the Middle East at that troubled time. Of course, the troubles continue now and that makes the commentary then all the more poignant now. The music is a little breezy and a little invigorating and all very pleasant considering. The images here include snaps along ericho Beach, where the festival is held, back toward Vancouver, but with a suggestion of the war brought closer to home. Partly All Live And Still Dancing CD Cover Screen Print Well, this is hardly art of mine. It's obviously something I nicked from somewhere on the Internet. I;ve used the image as a cover for a CD of source material for one of my radio shows on CiTR. This was part of an annual series of shows in honour of my friend Sean's birthday each July 4th. "The birth of a great nation and the birth of a great nellie," I say. The music was meant to be all live versions of some of his personal favourites, which are usually very heavy metal songs. I couldn't find all live versions, though. The cover is appropriate because poor Sean had just had an unfortunate experience and spent the night in slime at the bottom of a tree. The Anti-Vermin Seed vs. The Colossus Of Destiny CD Cover Screen Print This the cover for a CD of source material for a tribute to the world's greatest rock band, the Melvins. I'm not prone to worshipping a band, but I've all but worshipped the Melvins since their Houdini album. I have everything and like it all and have faith in the artistic itegrity and musical genius of the band, both King Buzzo and Dale Crover, of course, and others. Sometimes it can take a lot of attention to recognize what is great about a piece of music. I prepared this for a show on CiTR during my then on-going annual tribute, "The March Of The Melvins" and it's a loving tribute and odd merger of two very lengthy Melvins tracks into 4 pieces totalling 60:00 minutes. The John Peel Archives, Volumes 1-6 CD's Scan When I first learned of the John Peel show during my latter school days, I immediately fell in love with the wild and wonderful music. I think that in spite of a conservative nature and upbringing I was somehow immediately at home with the charcters there. At the time I tried to catalogue favourite songs and taped as much as possible. I taped over every pre-recorded cassette I'd owned previously except 4 Wheel Drive by Bachmad Turner Overdrive. I'd played this tapes for a long while anf have always loved them. Years later with a double cassette deck I condensed them onto higher quality tapes and arranged them for a well balanced listening experience - that much of being a DJ thing seems to have been part an integral part of my nature. Years after that I refined them even further into a 6 CD "library" of so many of those favourite songs. Some of the sound is pretty rough and even pieces of songs are missing or distorted, but I truly love this music. Image - digital 2004-04-22

Can Hip Hop Will Hip Hop CD Cover Scan This is a mellow collection of hip-hop and wholly Canadian and I think it's really good, although somehow it feels like a children's version of the music. I dedicated this one to Joshua, the son of my dear old friend Michael Ballard, who had at one time been at rick of being called Daryl after me, or so Michael once told me. Hippo Christmas This is a close up on one of my most ambitious projects to date, Happy Valley (see more of that below.) Although I had liked to play with drawing, I'd pretty much got no further than producing a few scratchy cartoons before I took this one on. For deeply personal reasons, I have always struggled to kno w how to finish it. Don't Be Scared It's Christmas CD Cover Scan This is a dangerous one. I'm not even sure that I should tell the whole story in public like this. So I won't. It's a poor quality impression of the drawing used for the 1st of my cmusic compliatons that ever made it to CD. There's a fantasically diverse collection of music here, carefully trimmed to fit a CD from a tape of the original 90 minute radio show on CiTR. Dancing Bear Red Business Card Edit I started my own enterprise once before (though not vigorously) and this was a colour and size manipulated scan of the original rough sketch of my Dancing Bear which I used as part of a log on a personal buisiness card. Since I don't have any professional intials behind my name, I liked to use the term FFI on the card, for "fine fellow indeed." Emphasizing the "deed" part was which was one of my popular discussions at the time. I've always been keen to be of some positive use to this world. Buddha With Rasta Hat, Spliff And Bong One of my first endeavours with image editing was some simple adjustments to graphic logs. Theere were only a few, but the prime example was Tag Whore, which was a play on Tag Heuer, the quality watch brand, which was the idea of either Darrell of Charles, the 2 friends who'd wanted me to help them with designing some t-shirt logs. I honestly can't tell you the connection now, but somehow as a result of some of that work I ended up with a scan of a photo of a bong and a joint and the cover of an LP featuring Tibetan bells creating this odd image. King Crimson Framed This is a version of the image that was the cover of my 1999 Christmas gift, a cassette with a copy of one of my radio shows. There was probably something Christmas-related in the show, I can't remember as I write (2011-01-02) because it s "always Christmas on World Heat," but I think I was covering Steve Edge's folk show on CiTR at the time and not having much folk this was more accessible rock and pop collection with themes vaguely related to kingliness and crimsoness. The Grand Doodle (Kwee-Kwee And The Bust Bee) After the management meeting mentioned in Fly Table and Eye Tunnel, below, I was inspired enough to set myself an ambition of sitting down with a proper piece of paper and a pen and trying to doodle something more sophisticated. this scan doesn;t do it justice, but truth be told I was quite taken aback when this came out over the course of 3 days (a long weekend, I think.) This one suggests to me something of my spirit hovering above the table and interested me enough to become influential. Razzleberry Card Technology such as colour printing was still not routinely available in 1998, so the scan of the drawing became a print on sky-like paper to be my Christmas Card this year. See below for more details. Image - pencil and paper / digital / print 1998-12-99
Razzleberry Enhanced A relatively early drawing in my now (2011-01-01) well established tradition of trying to create something unique for my friends each Christmas. As I write, the most recent example is a little more sophisticated than a card, which is the kirpalani-griffin.org concept. This drawing was a little smudged, so the scan was enhanced to improve the colour and contrast and whiten the smile. As simple as it is, this was more ambitious than most that went before. I was a hard working corporate guy at the time, but i found time to product something and was pleasantly surprised with the result. The original idea stems from Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, which I'd rented on video, which contains the exquisite song Razzleberry Dressing, Twice, which is the best thing that Tiny Tim can possibly imagine having for Christmas.
